For this workshop, Susan has assembled all her favorite techniques for creating exciting layers of colors and textures using fabric paints on cloth. Included in her repertoire are dribbling, splattering, flicking, spraying, sponging, squirting, scraping with credit cards, jell-o printing, printing with cardboard wrapped with rubber bands, Styrofoam stamps, bubble wrap, leaves, vegetables and textured brayers, and more. Students will produce beautiful pieces of cloth to hang by themselves (art cloth) or that can be used in mixed media collages. This workshop also provides information on color; design; and techniques for creating vibrant hues, mixing rich colors, developing color gradations, and producing exciting mingling of various color combinations.

Dinnerware Workshops are based on exploration and experimentation. I’ll bet you never thought of using Jell-O to make an art print. On March 19th, 2011 join me and try it out for yourself. I will lead a demonstration of printing on fabric using gelatin, yes, Jell-O, to make monoprints. I will also show you how to print on fabric using found objects and kitchen utensils. If you think this sounds crazy, come join me and be crazy too.

It’s great fun for those who want to explore new mediums, test the waters, and bridge the gap. Bring a friend and make it a friend-art-date. Be sure to wear old clothes or an apron. Dinnerware will provide all the fabric paints and several pieces of fabric. Bring extra fabric of all kinds to broaden your adventure.

If you'd like information about
the group, see our website at http://www.artclothnetwork.com.

Those of us who are members find that the opportunities for community,
conversation, sharing of techniques, inspiration and resources benefit our art
and creativity. We have recently increased our membership limits to 30 members
in good standing, including those on formal leave. When the number falls below
30, we accept new member applications. We currently have openings for up to six
new members.

While some of us also make art quilts or mixed media work, the group is focused
on art cloth and its specific surface design techniques and approaches. This
includes making lengths of cloth, rather than small samples or fat quarters.
Please read the information about art cloth on our website and look at examples,
to make sure that you are interested in this field. Only those artists who
submit examples of art cloth that meet this description will be considered for
membership.

We meet as a group every 9 to 10 months in different regions of the United
States, usually between August and October. Since these meetings are critical to
our growth and vitality, we require attendance at 2 out of 5 consecutive
meetings. Membership begins with the first meeting attended. Members bring and
discuss their work at these meetings, and we share other professional concerns
and opportunities. Previous meetings have been in Texas, Minnesota, Illinois,
Florida, California, Georgia, Arizona, and New Jersey. The 2011 meeting will be
in Florida.

We also produce a new exhibit annually, with a call for entries each year. Since
opportunities for showing art cloth are limited, this is an important membership
benefit. Members are required to enter two of five calls for entry in order to
maintain their membership status.

Only applicants who can and will attend the next meeting will be accepted into
the Art Cloth Network during this membership call period. That meeting will be
in or around St. Petersburg, Florida on either October 13-16 or November 10-13,
2011. Full details about the conference and this financial commitment will be
mailed to those extended a membership invitation.

The current deadline for membership applications is March 15, 2011, and you can
send in your application materials at any time prior to the deadline. You will
be notified by April 15, 2011 whether your application has been approved.
Tam is a mixed media artist with lots of personality and a BIG Heart. This site and its sister site Willowing.org are filled with a variety of groups (such as, a support group, a critique group, an art challenge group, an art journal group, etc.), interviews, classes she offers, links to other mixed media artists, and more. You can find pictures of her student's work there and free videos.

I signed up for her free Art, Heart, and Healing course. Over 1200 have enrolled in this course. It was first offered in October of 2010. However, it is still available. I started in December. Each of the four classes consists of two 1-hour videos and two pdf files with written instructions. The videos primarily consist of watching Tam create the project for the week. The camera is pointed at what she is doing and not at her. You can either watch the videos on-line or download them to your computer.

I downloaded lesson 1's videos, so I could watch her, stopped (hit the pause button) the video, and performed the step she just demonstrated. When I was done I had drawn and shaded in a face. This is about the third face I have ever drawn and the first I shaded. She uses watercolor crayons and pencils. I was amazed. It was easily and I had fun doing it.

After doing the face, we worked on the background. In addition to the art lesson, a healing exercise was incorporated into the artwork. I am always too serious; consequently, the message I created for myself was "It is okay to be playful!"

I know, I know, I need to work on a happier look! I have already started.

To continue my goal of being more playful, I have enrolled in her Magical Mystical Makings course where we will create goddess, angels, fairies, mermaids, and unicorns. This course begins on January 17, 2011. Go to her site, click on the class, and view a video advertising it. In her courses, you can upload your work for her to suggest ways for improvement. She uses Photoshop to show you what you can do to improve your work. If you want to give yourself a creativity present, may I suggest you consider enrolling in this course.Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-16160131871544451902010-12-23T19:47:00.000-07:002010-12-23T19:47:45.883-07:00Rainy California VisitIt rained my entire visit to southern California. My flights in both directions were late. On my return, part of the baggage machinery broke down and it took an additional twenty minutes to get my bags. And then it poured last night here in Arizona. However, I am home and sleeping in my own bed. There is no place like home!!!

In California, my mom, sister and I baked cookies and cakes all day Sunday. Here is a picture of mom hard at work.

We had a great time making and sampling our products. Monday, we took mom shopping and watched a movie. We had fillet mignon for dinner that I cooked. As many of you know, my husband does almost all the cooking in our house since he retired.

As I was typing this post, the cookies I put in the oven almost burned beyond recognition. I set the timer for 45 minutes and came into the studio to write this post. I had the clothes dryer on which is between the studio and the kitchen. Ali was making chestnut soup for dinner. This was a new recipe from book his Austrian friend sent him on Trieste.

The timer went off for the cookies and he just ignored it. I did not hear it because of the clothes dryer. When I came into the kitchen for dinner I remembered the cookies. The other rim is burnt, but the inside is okay. The soup was just okay. Ali did not like it and did not even finish it. So we joked about our two cooking fiascoes over dinner. Better that then cry!!!!
Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-91366294698196710112010-12-17T18:23:00.000-07:002010-12-17T18:23:28.637-07:00Florida Bird SafariLast week, my husband and I went to Florida to visit the Everglades and the Keys. In reviewing all of the 351 photos I took, I decided that I would characterize them by topics. The first topic is birds. While we did not see any bald eagles, we did same some amazing birds. First, were the birds we saw on the beaches on our trip from Tampa to the Everglades.
I am getting ready for the Wild Women Artists Trunk Show which is scheduled for this Sunday. I will be selling my dyed clothes, dyed scarves, mix media collages, and cell phone purses.

Four of mix media collages contain fabrics that I have colored either with dyes and/or fabric paint. A variety of techniques were used to created the interesting textures on these fabrics. The first two collages were mounted on solidly painted wood panels.

I decided to get a little creative with the painting of the wood panels for the next two fabric collages. I just love to paint.

The fifth collage was made using colored tissue paper that was torn into pieces and glued together with a mixture of elmer's glue and water to form a new sheet of paper. I plan to do some more with this technique. Texture was created on both the paper and the wood panel by applying gold metallic paint with a large holed sponge.

Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-51888005293100978192010-11-24T17:52:00.000-07:002010-11-24T17:52:27.461-07:00Petroglyphs

Monday, I finally went to look at some petroglyphs that are located northwest of Tucson. They are not the ones I went to see several years ago with my husband and a visitor from Austria. The two guys did not want to hike in the desert to see them. I was very disappointed. Years later, I finally got to see some petroglphs near my home.

Mitla is the town built by the Zaptotecs around 100 AD. One of its noted features are the geometric decorations that can be found on stone walls and door frames. I have always been intrigued by these decorations that were created by fitting together thousands of polished stones without mortar. I took many pictures of these decorations so that I use them to create interesting motifs for my art cloth. Last year, I started experimenting with one of these wall decorations.

Using a Canvas 11, a vector based program, I traced the major motif and then began experimenting with combing groups of them. The first motif I created was just a simple rotation of this element.

Then I tried combing several of these motifs to form a more interesting one.

Next I created a more intricate motif by repeating the basic one and also adding a truncated version of the original design element.

Basically this was created by flipping and rotating the various smaller pieces. Today, I returned to these designs and added one more.

These were printed and silk screens produced with my thermofax machine. I am really excited about using these on some scarves. Since tomorrow I have to get ready for an art sale this weekend, I may have to wait until Monday. I will just have to see how my day goes.
Then Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I dyed rayon blouses. You will have to wait till next week to see them. I still have to iron them.

We are driving tomorrow to CA to attend a 50th wedding anniversary party for third cousins (I think that is what they are or second cousins once removed). I never really understood how that works. They are having a big party at a Mariott hotel. These are some of my favorite cousins. I am looking forward to celebrating this event with them. I was almost 10 when they got married. Please be patient with me.

The prices for all my garments are based upon the number of times they are dyed. The red poncho featured in the last post was dyed twice and it fall special price is $73.00. The regular prices for the rayon ponchos are prices as follows:

Dyed once: $76.00

Dyed twice: $97.00

Dyed three times: $129.00

Fall specials are:

Dyed once: $57.00

Dyed twice: $73.00

Dyed three times: $97.00

Can't let it waste away. Consequently, on Monday I decided just to play. This is only the second time I have worked with black dye or paint. I do not know why I never tried to before. I think that will change now. I recently bought an 250 ml bottle of black Seta color.

My first experiment was to use one of my fabric tools - a brayer with rubber banks wrapped around it. I used it to print on a silk organza scarf. This was followed by printed with twelve erasers attached to a piece of plexi-glass with velcro on another one of these scarves. Usint the velcor was something Jane Dunnewold told us about when I took her Complex Cloth workshop about 10-11 years ago.

I was going to over dye them until my artist buddy, Chris, came over yesterday morning. She said leave them as is. When I showed another two artist friends in Tubac yesterday afternoon, they concurred with Chris. One even order a stamped version and requested that I use maroon instead of black. What do I know?

I next played with several small pieces of cotton that I had dyed previously. The next two I thought I had already steamed and washed out. However, after playing with the black dye, I steamed them and discovered new brighter colors popping out.

Like I said, I was just trying different tools and not worrying about creating a finished piece. I figured I could just cut them up for some of my fabric collages. I even tried using a sponge brush with one of my silk screens; which I did not like - too much dye through the screen. Again Chris surprised me, she said that these two should be framed or mounted and sold as is. I guess I need to filter my left brain. What do agree with Chris or should I just cut them up and use them in collages?
I do not like the middle section, but I think parts of it have possibilities for collages.

I do not know whether I like the front or the back of the last piece the best. Again, I do not think I had steamed and wash it before applying the black dye. That is why the front and back are different.
Wednesday and today I ironed them after soaking and washing them. I love the colors. So much of it is serendipitous, which makes it so much fun. This is my opportunity to just play with color!!!
Ann is a wonderful artist and a master serigrapher. Visit her web-site to see some of her incredible work. I always learn something new from my visits with Ann. She frequently loans me books to read. While there this weekend, she showed me the Ulano film she uses to cut intricate stencils out of. Many of her pieces were created with as many as 18 different colors. The amount of layering is phenomenal.Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-20040325034508258472010-10-21T19:25:00.000-07:002010-10-21T19:25:14.275-07:00Name This Piece of Art ClothLast year I applied several layers of deconstructed silk screening and a little sponging on a piece of Kona cotton.
For some reason they speak to me probably because they are timeless. I started with them to build up my inventory of stamps, stencils, and silk screens to add images to art cloth. About a year ago, I spent about an hour just drawing shapes with charcoal. I could not figure out what to do with the spirals because of their odd shapes. Recently, I told myself odd shapes are interesting - duh!!!

First I sprayed the charcoal drawings with hair spray to seal them. Then I traced the basic shapes of several of the spirals and glued the tracings to black paper. The spirals were cut out using a utility knife. These were then scanned into the computer, printed, and then silk screens were produced using a thermofax machine.

While cutting out the black paper, it occurred to me that the original charcoal drawings would make exciting silk screens. They were scanned into the computer and the stamp filter from Photoshop Elements was applied to them to make the marks that comprised the spirals more distinct. I reduced the size of these spirals, to add variety in size in the complementary motifs.

I finished with two screens that contain several different spirals all reduced in sized to fill up a large screen.

Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-36545076203301345972010-10-17T17:35:00.002-07:002010-10-26T17:57:49.986-07:00More Playing With ColorWednesday, I dyed again. The first dress was for a friend who wanted bright. So I just poured yellow and fuchsia dye over it.

Then I proceeded to over dyed pieces that I had dyed last week. The next one is a crinkled peasant blouse that was originally dyed yellow and over dyed fuchsia. Again the back was prettier than the front. I finally figured out why! When manipulating the clothes I was putting the back on the outside - DUH!!!

I was so excited to take the pictures, I did not iron it first.

Then I dyed a cotton farmer's dress that was suppose to be for me. It was first dyed yellow and then over dyed violet. I was expecting a different result because I previously dyed a silk scarf this way and got a beautiful color combination. But that was several years ago and silk dyes differently than silk, etc. The results are wonderful; the only problem is that I am a winter and I look awful in the finished garment. I guess someone else will be wearing it.
Originally it was a light turquoise. I told her that if she would want me to over dye it, I would. She took it home for awhile and then decided that she wanted more color. I over dyed it last Friday and took it over to her studio/gallery this weekend. She was all smiles!!!
I know it has been many months (over half a year) since I last posted a message. Please forgive me. I was dealing with some illness in my family. I am glad to be back in my studio ready to create.

During this long dry period, I had some quite interesting and positive adventures, so of which I plan to share with you over the next few posts. I met Cheryl Todd, who was the owner of Sweet Stuff, a boutique in Tubac, AZ. I brought in some of my dyed silk scarves for her to sell and she asked me if I sewed. I replied in the affirmative; and followed that with a proclamation that I would not sew any clothes for other people. However, I told her about the stock clothes that Dharma sells to dye. I brought in their catalog and I ordered some pieces to try. Below you will see three different items: a crepe de chine open poncho, a pair of cotton leggings, and a rayon closed poncho.

They were included in my application to be juried into Central Arts Gallery, a co-op in Tucson. They are in the process of moving the gallery to a new location, so I will probably not hear from them until early next year.

While shopping two weeks ago in Tubac, AZ, I visited a new store, Sweet Stuff. It is filled with wonderful treasures, including lovely flowing garments. I asked the owner if she was interested in selling hand-dyed silk scarves. She now has a collection of my scarves for sell and next week we will be talking about me dyeing some dresses for her. The owner is Cheryl Todd, a former ballerina and psychotherapist. She is a lovely person and I am thrilled to work with a her.

Sweet Stuff is in a little plaza containing the gallery of an artist friend, Roberta Rogers. Her watercolors are beautiful. When I visited Cheryl last week, Roberta was painting outside in the plaza that is surrounded by their establishment which they share with another artist Peter Chope. The scene of Roberta painting in the sun shine was very picturesque. Next time when I visit their charming plaza, I will bring my camera.Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-30411747014207065052009-12-25T19:56:00.006-07:002009-12-25T22:58:39.858-07:00InspiredMy fiber artist friend, Barbara Schneider, has just started a daily blog. In 1997 and again in 2007, Barbara created daily visual journals. Just click on Barbara's name to view her new blog.

She has inspired me to challenge myself to blog daily. I am hoping that putting this in writing and out to the universe will help me fulfill this commitment. The only exceptions will be when I am out of town. because I do not own a laptop computer. I beginning this week to give this project a beneficial initiation.

This week I am working on creating a small wall hanging as a class project. It depicts a picture I took of Antelope canyon . This is the same picture I used as inspiration for a post card I created last fall. Below are pictures of my photo and the quilt top of this project. All of the fabric, except the white organza, was painted using Seta Color paints. Tomorrow, I will quilt it. I think the floor should be quilted with ovals that will be free motioned. This is something I will need to practice a little before proceeding. The rest of the quilting can be done very slowly using my walking foot. I have perfected sewing very slowly with my Pfaff, which is almost 30 years old. Sewing slowly with this machine has become a meditation.

Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-51260836825244023522009-10-25T22:07:00.000-07:002009-10-25T22:07:49.894-07:00Art Cloth Network MeetingOn Wednesday, I returned from the Art Cloth Network meeting, which was held in Houston this year. The Art Cloth Network is dedicated to exploring and promoting ART CLOTH. In addition to a business meeting, we also have gallery where members show their recent work. Pictures of our meeting can be seen at the Art Cloth Network Blog. Since Art Cloth Network had a juried exhibit at Archway Gallery in Houston, we attended a Meet the Artist Reception there on Tuesday. The exhibit is titled Quake. Be sure to double click on each image to view the whole piece.

I am happy to report that I had two unexpected sales in September. At one of my salon/critique group meetings early in September, I brought one of my fabric collages that I just finished stitching for critique. I was planning on mounting it on wood, but I did not have time to do so before our meeting. To my surprise and delight, Barbara Amyx told me she wanted to buy it when it was finished. However, she told me not to hammer any nails into the wood. I delivered this piece to her at our next meeting. All of the fabrics in this collage are ones that I have dyed and/or painted. I have also started work on some more. I will post pictures when they are finished.
Most of the wood collages I make have nails hammered into them. Below is a picture of the one that was awarded the Judge's Purchase Award in 2008 at Tubac Center of the Arts.
Barbara and two other painters rent a house in Tucson and use it as a studio. In September, they invited a group of artist, collectors, and students for a light lunch and networking. I wore one of the silk scarves I had dyed. One of the attendees went home with it wrapped around her neck!Susan Ettlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13267665073077400278noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-491050307205354098.post-29615849363880819452009-10-06T17:39:00.002-07:002009-10-06T17:45:48.419-07:00September Studio Highlights or What the Heck I 've Been Up ToSeptember was a productive month. On September 10 and 17, I taught an Introduction to Art Cloth course in Tucson. One of my new favorite techniques that I adapted from Make your Mark: Explore your Creatviity and Discover Your Inner Artist, a book by Margaret Peot is applying paint using a brayers wrapped with paint using a brayer with rubber bands wrapped about it on two pieces of commercial fabric. On the first fabric pictured below, I then stamped over the brayered layer with carved erasers using citrine Lumiere. On the second one, I sponged printed with the same paint. Let me know what you think of the results.
In September, I spent many hours working on the Sonoita Elementary School project. I drove out to the school three times (one hour and ten minutes each way) to get some help with sewing jeans strips together for mounting the twenty second graders' quilt blocks.

One day, a mother and I spent five hours pinning and sewing. I finished this wall hanging last week. Since there is no place in my home to hang it to photograph, I laid it on my bed and stood on a ladder to snap a photo. Once it is hung at the school, I will be able to get a better shots of it.
My DH was so impressed with the finish product that he wants to keep it. I told him that was not possible. However, it certainly the best compliment he could have given me.

I also finished the top for another quilt square for the desert beauties collection: the lantana. Some of the lantanas have flowers that are all the same color and others have multiple colors. I decided to depict the one that has different colored flowers. Below is a picture of two plants in my garden, followed by my quilt square.
